This past weekend was filled with upset in the Toronto sports market.
I was lucky enough or unlucky to be at the Raps VS Cavs game on Saturday. With a 15 point lead at one point in the game, as usual, the Raps were able to give away the lead and end up with a buzzer beater loss.
This seems to be a common theme among Toronto sports teams. We lack the ability to finish out games strong. Again this weekend the Leafs were unable to hold a 2-1 third period lead against the NY Rangers. Which is not that bad considering the Rangers have potentially the best front 3 in the entire league (Gaborik, Richards, Nash).
The only way Toronto sports teams are going to be able to rise from the ashes is with the proper leadership and support. This is one of the largest sports cities, not only in Canada but in the world. If we can not keep up with the emerging markets then soon enough interest in the younger generations in Toronto sports teams will fade. We can already see signs of it with young kids cheering for the Pittsburgh penguins due to Sydney Crosby. For us to survive we need a leader and play maker like this on our teams.
This is already being done with the Toronto Blue Jays, making tons of trades and acquisitions to create a power house and a 1/8 favourite to win the world series. I am personally looking forward to this Blue Jays team more than any team in Toronto history, that I can remember. Being compared to the 92/93 Jays I like our odds!
Stay Tuned
I agree wholeheartedly - leadership is key. Looking forward to the Jays season too!
